Red Sea: diving at Sharm el Sheikh,
Dahab, & Mangrove Bay

A bluespotted stingray hides on the seafloor in the Red Sea

Our first visit to the Sharm El Sheikh, Sinai’s apex in the Red sea, dates from 1992. The photos included here are from visits to the Red Sea in 1995, 1997, 1998, 2001 and 2006. The sites we’ve visited include Sharm El Sheikh, Dahab, Mangrove Bay and the Dalak Islands off Eritrea. Good underwater visibility and rich marine-life (with many endemic species) often contrasts with unpredictable sea conditions from desert winds and dust storms. The ever increasing number of divers has brought substantial damage to many previously magnificent sites. The number and size of dive boats tied together to popular sites’ moorings has grown considerably, and often the mass of divers in the water at the same time simply excludes wide-angle ambiance photography.
